25 June 2021 will mark the historic opening of the ADI Design Museum-Compasso d’Oro, established to celebrate the design heritage of the historic collection awarded the Compasso d’Oro, a prize created in 1954 based on Giò Ponti’s idea of promoting outstanding Italian-made design, which is still the oldest and most prestigious award in the sector at a global level.

This moment enshrines Milan’s role as the centre of the Made in Italy design world. Gruppo Cimbali and MUMAC will take part to testify to the importance of design in the coffee machine sector. The permanent exhibition “Il cucchiaio e la città” (The spoon and the city) curated by Beppe Finessi showcases the famous La Cimbali Pitagora coffee machine, winner of the 1962 Compasso d’Oro, designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, the only coffee machine to ever win the coveted prize. Gruppo Cimbali and MUMAC have contributed to enhancing the permanent collection through the historic donation in 1962 of a grey Pitagora model, the recent donation of an unpublished square advertising brochure for the same coffee machine and the loan of several documents from the company’s historical archive.

The “Il cucchiaio e la città” permanent exhibition, which brings together and exhibits all the products that have won a Compasso d’Oro award, is housed in a historic 1930s venue in Milan, which has been restored and turned into the ADI Design Museum-Compasso d’Oro, a place that now represents the idea of renewing and enhancing the rich legacy of industrial archaeology as a distinctive feature of the building itself. It represents national cultural heritage recognised by the Ministry of Culture as being of “exceptional artistic and historical interest”.

ADI Design Musem-Compasso d’Oro is located in Piazza Compasso d’Oro 1, Milan. Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10.30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Admission by prior reservation through the Museum’s online ticket office
