Would you like to come with us on a journey of discovery of the characters who wrote the history of espresso? In this column packed with content each week, you can find out about the people who, from the end of the 19th century onwards, contributed to the development of the sector, with intuition, creativity, ingenuity, ideas and skills. The history is one triggered by a kind of ‘collective genius’: many people, at different times in history, contributed to the industry through their inventiveness, adding indispensable pieces to the picture of coffee as we understand it today; simply espresso. We will feature unpublished and published content from the new book SENSO ESPRESSO. Coffee. Style. Emotions.

The book is the result of research and studies conducted by MUMAC in collaboration with other organisations, archives and business museums, giving the work a more solid historical basis from which to reconstruct a history that is exciting and that still has much to reveal. For historical insights into the world of espresso coffee machines, based on previous studies (Enrico Maltoni and Ian Berstein), a team coordinated by Barbara Foglia, MUMAC Manager, pursued new avenues of knowledge and discovery, together with resources from the museum’s historical archive and the MUMAC Library.

On the basis of previous knowledge and studies, unpublished insights and details have emerged that here find their place thanks to new sources and research conducted with passion by Edgardo Ferrero, Services Director of Gruppo Cimbali, bringing to light details faded by time. The study team was also supervised by Enrico Maltoni and a pool of young contributors (Anna Cento, Fabio Mantella, Alessandro Motta and Rita Saiu). You will be whisked away on an exciting coffee journey in six segments, with new and sometimes unexpected twists and turns.

Starting on Friday 3 June, we can’t wait for you to join us every Friday with the faces of espresso on social media and on the MUMAC website for further fascinating facts and insights.
